The Friday Focus #3: Organ Donors, Murder, and the Paradoxes of Democracy

Hey friends,
Happy Friday!
Here’s everything else I wanted to share this week to start your weekend right:

Last hours of an organ donor (17 minutes): A beautiful perspective on life, death, and organ donation from an anesthesiologist who has assisted in the harvesting of organs from donors. How do you balance the dignity of the deceased with the race against time to save lives?
Ground Control to Mr. Meline (26 minutes): A teacher. An astronaut. A son. A murder. A reform. This piece touched me, from hearing the story of an incredible teacher, to reading about a community cut through by tragedy and how they heal. A tragic, yet beautiful story.

Six paradoxes of democracy
Any time J.J. McCullough releases a new video, I learn something new. In this, McCullough discusses how, while democracy is an admirable institution worth defending, the very things that democracy protects are the things that will eventually enable its destruction.
Oh baby, we’re talking interest rates
If you’ve never seen a Good Work video before, strap in. Dan Toomey & co. are hilarious, and manage to use comedy to help distil complex (and often boring) topics down to their basics in an entertaining fashion. This video is no exception. If a concept like interest rates is too boring for you to care about, check it out!

Dawes, Oh Brother

I first learned about Dawes in November 2012, and I’ve not heard them release a bad album since. Oh Brother released just this morning, so I haven’t had enough time with it to form a concrete opinion, but their singles House Parties and Still Strangers Sometimes are great, making me excited to dive in to the rest!

No man can serve two masters. Your life is shaped by the end you live for. You are made in the image of what you desire.
Thomas Merton, Thoughts in Solitude
We all know what we think we live for. Family, faith, country, community, etc. But are you really living for those things? What can you do this weekend to check what master you’re serving, and how can you reset to get back on the right track?
